The psalmist isn't being mean-spirited here; he's warning about a genuine spiritual consequence. Trust shapes you. Worship forms you. When you worship what's dead, you become deadened.
The psalmist, now shifting from sarcasm to serious warning
Paul picks this up in Romans—we become like what we worship. Spiritual formation happens through what captures our devotion. Choosing dead idols over the living God doesn't leave you unchanged.
Those who manufacture idols and those who trust them undergo a spiritual deformation, becoming as spiritually inert and senseless as the objects they venerate.
This verse articulates what Augustine termed 'moral conformity to one's object of worship'—you become what you bow to. The Hebrew dommah (they become like) suggests not metaphorical similarity but actual spiritual degradation. Those who trust in senseless objects absorb their senselessness; craftsmanship in service to false worship corrupts the human spirit itself.
