This grows out of the greatest commandment—to love your neighbor as yourself—which Jesus said sums up all the law and the prophets. It's not a new idea, but Paul is making it concrete for everyday life.
Rather than a myopic focus on personal advantage, Christians must cultivate what scholars call 'moral imagination'—the capacity to see and actively pursue the genuine welfare of others.
The Greek skopéō ('look toward, aim at') suggests deliberate attention, not passive sentiment. In a society structured by patronage and self-advancement, Paul's instruction—to scout out and prioritize others' welfare—was economically and socially disruptive. This wasn't counsel of perfection but baseline Christian conduct.

This instantiates the law of Christ articulated in Galatians 6:2 and fulfills the second great commandment. It prefigures the scandal of Christian mutual obligation that would eventually reshape Mediterranean social structures.
