What It Means

Matthew 3:14, in plain English

John tried to stop Jesus, saying: 'I'm the one who should be baptized by You, not the other way around.' He knew he was looking at someone far greater than himself.

The scholar's commentary

John's attempt to prevent (diekoluen, imperfect tense suggesting repeated attempts) Jesus's baptism demonstrates his recognition of Jesus's superiority. His protest ('I need to be baptized by You') acknowledges the Spirit-and-fire baptism he himself prophesied.

Language and setting

John's reluctance reveals genuine prophetic insight: he recognizes the absurdity of the sinless Messiah submitting to a sinner's baptism of repentance.

Significance

Even John, the greatest prophet, recognizes his subordinate role. His humility models the proper response to encountering Jesus.

16As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him.
