Jesus traveled from Galilee all the way to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. He didn't need to repent, but He came anyway. He chose to stand with the people He came to save.

The scholar's commentary

Jesus travels from Galilee to the Jordan (approximately 60 miles) specifically to be baptized by John. His initiative (paraginetai, arrives/appears) indicates deliberate purpose, not coincidence.

Language and setting

Jesus's request for a baptism of repentance is theologically paradoxical since He was sinless (2 Corinthians 5:21). His baptism represents solidarity with sinful humanity, not personal repentance.
