The scholar's commentary

The spirit's violent manifestations — convulsions, foaming, teeth-grinding, rigidity — are described with clinical precision. The disciples' inability (ouk ischysan) to expel it raises questions about the nature and degree of demonic power.

Language and setting

The failed exorcism by the disciples contrasts with their earlier success (Mark 6:13), suggesting that spiritual authority requires ongoing dependence rather than assumed competence.

Voice

The father continues his description of the symptoms and reports the disciples' failure.

Significance

The father catalogs his son's suffering in vivid detail and adds the crushing disappointment: 'I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't.' The failure of the disciples amplifies the father's desperation.

20So they brought him, and seeing Jesus, the spirit immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.
