What Mark is about

Mark begins abruptly with John the Baptist in the wilderness, Jesus's baptism, and His temptation—all within the first thirteen verses. Jesus then inaugurates His Galilean ministry proclaiming the kingdom, calls four fishermen, exorcises a demon in the Capernaum synagogue, heals Peter's mother-in-law, cleanses a leper, and moves through Galilee teaching and healing.

Mark is widely considered the earliest Gospel, written around 65–70 AD, likely in Rome for a Gentile-Christian audience facing persecution. The breathless pace (euthys/'immediately' appears over forty times) reflects Mark's urgent narrative style. The messianic secret—Jesus commanding silence about His identity—is a distinctive Markan theme.

1 Immediately Mark's favorite word is 'immediately.' His Gospel moves fast, stripping away everything except the urgency of who Jesus is and what He came to do. 2 Breaking the Rules Jesus forgives sins, eats with outcasts, and lets his disciples skip fasting. The religious leaders can barely keep up with the offenses. 3 Choosing the Twelve A man with a withered hand, a crowd pressing in from every side, and twelve unlikely men called to change the world. 4 Storms and Seeds Jesus teaches about seeds that fall on different soils, then proves his authority by silencing a storm with a single command. 5 Legion and the Little Girl A man possessed by a thousand demons, a woman who has bled for twelve years, a father whose daughter has just died — all healed in a single chapter. 6 Rejected and Relentless His hometown dismisses him, a king beheads his cousin, and the crowds won't stop coming. Jesus feeds five thousand anyway. 7 Beyond the Boundaries Jesus declares all foods clean and then crosses into Gentile territory to heal a woman's daughter. The walls are coming down. 8 Who Do You Say I Am? After feeding four thousand and restoring a blind man's sight, Jesus asks the question that changes everything. 9 Coming Down the Mountain Dazzling glory on the mountaintop gives way to a demon-possessed boy at the bottom. The disciples can't handle either scene. 10 The Servant King Jesus redefines greatness. The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve — and to give His life as a ransom. 11 Clearing the Temple Jesus curses a fig tree, storms the temple courts, and challenges the entire religious economy of Jerusalem in a single day. 12 The Widow's Offering Trick questions from every direction, a scribe who almost gets it, and a poor widow who gives everything — two small coins that outweigh them all. 13 Watch and Wait Jesus sits on the Mount of Olives and describes the end of the age. His final command is simple and relentless: stay alert. 14 Betrayal Begins A woman anoints Jesus with costly perfume while Judas negotiates his price. The Last Supper, Gethsemane, and Peter's denial unfold in rapid succession. 15 The Crucifixion Pilate washes his hands, soldiers mock the King of Kings, and darkness covers the land. The curtain in the temple tears from top to bottom. 16 The Empty Tomb Three women arrive at dawn expecting a corpse. They find a young man in white and a message that rewrites everything: he is risen.
