The scholar's commentary

John's head is brought on a platter — transforming a banquet dish into an instrument of macabre presentation — given to the girl, who delivers it to her mother. The chain of transfer (executioner to girl to Herodias) distributes but does not diminish guilt.

Language and setting

The platter detail creates a grotesque parody of the banquet feast. Herodias receiving her prize completes the Jezebel parallel and reveals the ultimate puppet master behind the scene.

Significance

29When John’s disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and placed it in a tomb.
