This is your invitation. You don't need the right family name or background. If you follow God, you are part of Jesus' family—as close to Him as a brother, sister, or mother.
Jesus defines the qualification for being part of His family: doing the will of God.
It doesn't matter where you come from or who your parents are. If you seek God's will, Jesus calls you brother, sister, mother. You belong to Him, and you belong with each other.
Jesus articulated the defining criterion: 'Whoever does the will of God (to thelēma tou theou) is My brother and sister and mother'—making obedience to God, not bloodline, the basis of kinship with Christ.
This statement democratized access to Jesus' family: anyone, regardless of ethnic or social background, could enter the closest possible relationship with Jesus through doing God's will. This was revolutionary in a kinship-based society.
Jesus gives the definitive statement on spiritual family, establishing divine obedience as the criterion for kinship with Him.
The inclusion of 'sister' alongside 'brother and mother' is notable in a patriarchal context, affirming women's full membership in the family of God. Doing God's will creates bonds deeper than biology.
