Whenever evil spirits saw Jesus, they fell down before Him and screamed, 'You are the Son of God!'
The demons couldn't help themselves—they recognized Jesus instantly and were compelled to acknowledge who He was. The spiritual realm had no doubts about His identity.
Mark describes the consistent reaction of unclean spirits to Jesus' presence throughout His ministry.
Every time the forces of evil encountered Jesus, they dropped to the ground and confessed His identity. They couldn't fight it, couldn't fake it, couldn't hide from it. They knew exactly who He was.
Unclean spirits (ta pneumata ta akatharta), upon seeing Jesus, fell prostrate (prosepipten) before Him and cried out (ekrazon), 'You are the Son of God (ho huios tou theou)!'
The demons' prostration and confession constituted involuntary acknowledgment of Jesus' supreme authority. Their plural, repeated action (imperfect tenses) suggests this occurred regularly throughout His ministry.
Mark describes the demons' consistent reaction to Jesus: forced submission and involuntary confession of His divine identity.
The demonic confessions created a recurring irony in Mark: the supernatural realm recognized Jesus' identity more clearly than the human characters did. The spirits' prostration was involuntary worship forced by superior authority.
9Jesus asked His disciples to have a boat ready for Him so that the crowd would not crush Him.
10For He had healed so many that all who had diseases were pressing forward to touch Him.
11And when the unclean spirits saw Him, they fell down before Him and cried out, “You are the Son of God!”
12But He warned them sternly not to make Him known.
13Then Jesus went up on the mountain and called for those He wanted, and they came to Him.
