James and John immediately (euthys) left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants (misthōtōn) and followed Jesus, demonstrating the radical priority of discipleship over family and livelihood.

Language and setting

The mention of hired workers indicates the Zebedee family's relative wealth, making the brothers' departure even more costly. The willingness to leave family echoes the later discipleship teaching of Mark 10:29-30.
