What 2 Timothy is about

Paul writes what is widely regarded as his final letter, composed during a second Roman imprisonment with execution likely imminent. He reminds Timothy of his sincere faith (pistis anypokritos), inherited from his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice, and urges him to fan into flame (anazōpyrein) the gift of God received through Paul’s laying on of hands. God’s gift is not a spirit of cowardice (deilia) but of power, love, and self-discipline (sōphronismos). Paul appeals to Timothy not to be ashamed of the gospel or of Paul as a prisoner, but to share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God. He references God’s purpose and grace given in Christ before the ages began. The chapter ends with Paul’s lament that all in Asia deserted him, but Onesiphorus refreshed him and was not ashamed of his chains.

This second imprisonment (ca. AD 64–67) differs from the relatively comfortable house arrest of Acts 28. Tradition places Paul in the Mamertine Prison, and the letter’s tone suggests he expects death (cf. 4:6–8). The abandonment by Asian Christians may reflect the chilling effect of Nero’s persecution.

1 Paul's Last Words Written from a Roman dungeon, this is likely Paul's final letter. It reads like a father passing the torch to a son — tender, urgent, unshakable. 2 A Good Soldier Endure hardship like a soldier, compete by the rules like an athlete, work hard like a farmer. Paul gives Timothy three metaphors for faithful ministry. 3 Terrible Times Ahead People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, ungrateful. But continue in what you've learned — all Scripture is God-breathed. 4 I Have Fought the Good Fight Paul knows his execution is near. He has finished the race and kept the faith. His final letter is both a farewell and a charge to carry on.
