He identifies Hymenaeus and Alexander as teachers who have shipwrecked their faith and been handed over to Satan for corrective discipline. The chapter contains Paul’s powerful autobiographical testimony: formerly a blasphemer and persecutor, he received mercy as the foremost of sinners, becoming a prototype (hypotyposis) of Christ’s unlimited patience for all who would believe.
The Pastoral Epistles (1-2 Timothy, Titus) address the organizational challenges of second-generation Christianity. Ephesus was a major center of diverse religious practice, including the cult of Artemis, mystery religions, and Jewish-Hellenistic syncretism, creating a fertile environment for the theological confusion Paul combats.
