Language and setting

The narrative's concision—וַיִּשְׁאוּ אֶת־הַמִּנְחָה (vayishu et-haminchah, 'they took up the gift')—suggests resolution and action. The verb וַיֵּרְדוּ (vayerdu, 'they went down') uses the spatial metaphor of descent that frames Egypt throughout Genesis as both salvation and exile. Their hasty movement (וַיִּשְׁמְרוּ־אֶל־פְּנֵי־יוֹסֵף, 'stood before Joseph') replicates their earlier presentation but now with Benjamin present, completing the composition Joseph required.
