What It Means

Ezekiel 36:8, in plain English

But now God turns to Israel with completely different news: the mountains will become fertile again, producing crops and abundance, because God's people are coming home.

This is the pivot moment. After verses of describing judgment and enemy mocking, God shifts to restoration. The exiles will return. The land will be reclaimed. Life will flourish again where it had been dead.

The scholar's commentary

The mountains of Israel will become productive again, bearing fruit and providing for the returning people.

Language and setting

The Hebrew verb פָּרַח (parach, 'produce branches') and יִשְׂאוּ פְּרִי ('bear fruit') employ agricultural imagery resonant with Levitical covenant blessings (Deuteronomy 28:4, 11). The 'soon' (Hebrew: קָרוֹב, qarov) introduces temporal urgency—return is imminent, not distant. For exiles whose livelihood and identity were rooted in agricultural stewardship, this promise reconstitutes their fundamental relationship to creation.

Significance

The restoration moves from negative reversal (enemies shamed) to positive transformation (land made fruitful), shifting the oracle's focus to Israel's renewal rather than external vindication.

7Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I have sworn with an uplifted hand that surely the nations around you will endure reproach of their own.

8But you, O mountains of Israel, will produce branches and bear fruit for My people Israel, for they will soon come home.

9For behold, I am on your side; I will turn toward you, and you will be tilled and sown.

10I will multiply the people upon you—the house of Israel in its entirety. The cities will be inhabited and the ruins rebuilt.
