Language and setting

The Hebrew verb dabaq, translated 'clung,' carries covenantal weight throughout Scripture—it denotes adhesion to God (Deuteronomy 4:4), loyalty to spouse (Genesis 2:24), and here, extraordinary familial devotion. The weeping (bekhi) and kissing (neshaqah) of Orpah represent genuine emotion and respect, yet they ultimately yield to practical necessity. Ruth's dabaq contrasts sharply: it suggests irrevocable commitment despite the logical reasons for departure.
