Paul anticipates the objection that if God hardens whom God will, then why does God hold people accountable? For how can anyone resist God's will?

Language and setting

The imagined interlocutor (*tis* moi, τίς μοι, 'who to me?'—an idiom introducing an objection) voices the reductio ad absurdum of Paul's sovereignty language: if God's will determines all things, including hardening, then condemnation seems unjust. The phrase *tō thelēmati autou* (τῷ θελήματι αὐτοῦ, 'to his will') emphasizes God's intentional determination. This objection—often called the problem of determinism and responsibility—has exercised theologians from Augustine through Calvin to contemporary Reformed and Arminian debates. Paul's interlocutor represents Jewish and Gentile believers alike who found the logic of absolute sovereignty troubling.

Significance

This objection represents the perennial tension in Christian soteriology: how can God be absolutely sovereign and humans be genuinely responsible? Paul does not resolve this tension philosophically but addresses it rhetorically and pastorally in the verses that follow.

21Does not the potter have the right to make from the same lump of clay one vessel for special occasions and another for common use?
