What Revelation is about

The Apocalypse opens with its preamble identifying the work as apokalypsis Iesou Christou—a divine disclosure mediated through angelic transmission to John on Patmos. The epistolary greeting to the seven churches of Asia Minor employs a trinitarian formula, and the doxology exalts Christ as the faithful witness (ho martys ho pistos), firstborn from the dead, and ruler of earthly kings. John's inaugural vision of the glorified Son of Man among seven golden lampstands draws heavily on Daniel 7 and 10, establishing the Christological lens through which the entire book must be read.

Written during a period of imperial pressure—most scholars date it to the reign of Domitian (ca. 95 AD)—the letter originates from Patmos, a small Aegean island used for Roman political exile. The seven churches represent real congregations along a circular postal route in the Roman province of Asia.

1 The Revelation The Bible's final book pulls back the curtain on reality. What John sees is terrifying, beautiful, and ultimately hopeful — a God who makes all things new. 2 Letters to the Churches: Part One Ephesus has lost its first love. Smyrna faces persecution. Pergamum tolerates false teaching. Thyatira harbors a prophetess. Jesus knows each church intimately. 3 Letters to the Churches: Part Two Sardis looks alive but is dead. Philadelphia has an open door no one can shut. Laodicea is lukewarm — and Jesus stands at the door, knocking. 4 The Throne Room John is shown heaven. What he sees is overwhelming — a throne, living creatures, elders, and a worship that never stops. 5 The Lamb Who Was Slain A scroll sealed with seven seals, and no one in heaven or earth can open it — until a slaughtered Lamb steps forward and the universe erupts in worship. 6 The Four Horsemen Conquest, war, famine, and death ride out as the first four seals are broken. The martyrs cry out from under the altar: how long, O Lord? 7 The Sealed and the Multitude One hundred forty-four thousand are sealed from every tribe of Israel. Then a numberless multitude from every nation stands before the throne, robed in white. 8 The Seven Trumpets Begin Silence in heaven for half an hour. Then seven angels raise their trumpets. Hail, fire, blood — a third of the earth is scorched. 9 The Abyss Opens Locusts with scorpion tails swarm from the bottomless pit, and an army of two hundred million crosses the Euphrates. Still, humanity refuses to repent. 10 The Angel and the Little Scroll A mighty angel plants one foot on the sea and one on the land. John is told to eat a scroll — sweet in his mouth, bitter in his stomach. 11 The Two Witnesses Two prophets testify for 1,260 days, breathing fire on their enemies. When they're finally killed, the whole world celebrates — until they rise again. 12 The Woman and the Dragon A woman clothed with the sun gives birth while a great red dragon waits to devour her child. War breaks out in heaven, and the dragon is cast down. 13 The Beast from the Sea A beast rises with ten horns and seven heads, wielding authority from the dragon. A second beast forces everyone to receive a mark — the number is 666. 14 The Harvest of the Earth The Lamb stands on Mount Zion with the 144,000. Angels fly overhead with eternal messages. Two harvests begin — one of grain, one of grapes for the winepress. 15 The Song of Moses and the Lamb Those who conquered the beast stand on a sea of glass, singing. Seven angels emerge from the temple carrying seven golden bowls full of God's wrath. 16 The Seven Bowls Seven bowls of wrath are poured out — sores, blood, scorching heat, darkness, and a final earthquake greater than any since humanity began. 17 The Fall of Babylon A woman in purple and scarlet sits on a scarlet beast, drunk on the blood of the saints. An angel explains the mystery and announces her destruction. 18 Babylon Is Fallen In a single hour, the great city falls. Kings weep, merchants mourn their lost cargo, and a voice cries: come out of her, my people. 19 The Rider on the White Horse Heaven opens and a rider appears — his robe dipped in blood, his name the Word of God. The armies of heaven follow, and the beast is captured. 20 The Thousand Years Satan is bound for a thousand years, then released for a final rebellion. The dead stand before a great white throne, and the books are opened. 21 All Things New The Bible ends where it began — God dwelling with His people. Every tear wiped away. Every broken thing made new. The gates never close. 22 Come, Lord Jesus The final invitation. The Spirit and the bride say: Come. The last words of Scripture are a promise and a prayer.
