When you have the ability to help someone who deserves it, don't hold back—do it now, in the moment when you can actually make a difference.
The teacher is addressing a real human tendency: we rationalize delay, we assume we'll help 'someday,' we pretend we don't have resources we actually have. This is about honesty and action in the present moment.

This echoes God's own character throughout Scripture—His willingness to help His people, and His call for His people to reflect that generosity. It appears in the Law, the Psalms, and especially in Jesus' teaching about caring for the vulnerable.
When you have the capacity to help someone in genuine need, do not withhold that assistance—extend beneficial action actively and immediately.
The phrase 'do not withhold good' (אַל תִּמְנַע טוֹב, 'al timna tov) uses a double negative construction (negative command + negative verb) that intensifies the obligation. The בעל (ba'al, translated 'deserving') refers to those who legitimately have a claim on one's resources. This represents a crucial shift from protecting one's own interests (vv. 21-26) to attending to communal obligation—a movement from self-preservation to social participation. The phrase 'within your power' (בְיַד אֱלֹהֶיךָ, be-yad elohekha, 'in your hand') emphasizes that ability entails responsibility.
The wisdom teacher now turns from internal cultivation and divine protection to ethical practice within the social body.
This anticipates Jesus' teaching on the Good Samaritan (Luke 10) and Paul's instruction that 'it is more blessed to give than to receive' (Acts 20:35); it embodies the covenantal principle that those who have received God's blessing are stewards obligated to distribute mercy.
