The Hebrew verb for 'sharpens' is חָדַד (chadad), meaning to make sharp or keen—the image is of two tools in deliberate contact, each improving the other's capacity. The verse assumes that serious engagement with another thinking person—conversation, debate, challenge—actually improves both participants. This operates through friction: you cannot refine yourself in isolation. The audience includes the young seeking growth and those already mature who wish to continue developing. The verse operates countercultural to both contemporary individualism and to the assumption that isolation provides peace.
