When someone listens to correction that actually gives them life—words meant to help them grow—they end up living among people who are wise.

The Hebrew שׁוֹמֵר־תוֹכַחַת חַיִּים (shomer-tokhahat chayim, 'he who heeds the reproof of life') portrays reproof not as punishment but as תוֹכַחַת חַיִּים—literally 'reproof of lives' or 'life-giving reproof.' The verb שׁוֹמַר (shamar, 'keep' or 'guard') suggests that one actively preserves, treasures, and acts on correction. The consequence is dwelling (יִשְׁכּוֹן, yiskhon, 'will dwell') with the wise—not merely occasional consultation but residential participation in wisdom's community. This reflects the ancient understanding of wisdom as a mode of life shared among practitioners.
