The Last Supper

What It Means

Matthew 26:27, in plain English

Then Jesus takes the cup, gives thanks, and passes it to them, saying: drink from this, all of you.

Why it's here

The word 'Eucharist' comes from the Greek word for 'giving thanks' — which is exactly what Jesus does here before offering the cup.

Who's speaking

Jesus offers the cup to all His disciples, inviting every single one to share in it.

Where it sits in the story

He includes everyone. All of you, He says. Even the one who will betray Him holds this cup. That is the depth of His grace.

A Closer Look

The scholar's commentary

Jesus takes the cup (poterion), gives thanks (eucharistesas — the root of 'Eucharist'), and offers it to all, commanding universal participation.

Language and setting

This likely corresponds to the third cup of the Passover Seder, the 'cup of blessing' (kos ha-berakah), which Paul also references in 1 Corinthians 10:16.

Voice

Jesus offers the cup to all disciples present, emphasizing communal participation.

Significance

The cup of the Passover meal is given new meaning as Jesus invites every disciple to share in what His blood will accomplish.

In context

Matthew 26:25–29

25Then Judas, who would betray Him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?”

26While they were eating, Jesus took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is My body.”

27Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.

28This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

29I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

Read all of Matthew 26 — Bread broken. Wine poured. A betrayal predicted. The longest night in history begins around a table.
