How blessed is the servant who is found doing exactly what he's supposed to be doing when the master comes home! That's the picture of a life well lived.
The goal isn't to figure out when Jesus is coming back. The goal is to be found faithfully living out your calling whenever that moment arrives.
Jesus paints a beautiful picture of what it looks like to be caught doing the right thing.
Imagine Jesus returning and finding you in the middle of loving someone, serving someone, doing exactly what He asked. That's the most blessed life there is.
The master's return finds the faithful servant actively doing (poiounta) what was entrusted to him. The word 'blessed' (makarios) echoes the Beatitudes, connecting faithful service with eschatological blessing. Active obedience at the moment of the master's return defines true faithfulness.
Being 'found doing so' implies that faithfulness is not a one-time decision but an ongoing lifestyle. The blessing comes not from perfect knowledge of timing but from consistent action.
Jesus pronounces a beatitude upon the servant found faithfully working at the master's return.
The happiest servant is the one caught doing exactly what the master asked. Not anxiously watching the clock, not idly waiting, but actively serving. That's the picture of readiness.
44For this reason, you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect.
45Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household, to give the others their food at the proper time?
46Blessed is that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.
47Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
48But suppose that servant is wicked and says in his heart, ‘My master will be away a long time.’
