The scholar's commentary

Jesus uses a burglar analogy: if the homeowner (oikodespotēs) knew which 'watch of the night' (phulakē) the thief was coming, he would have kept watch (egrēgorēsen) and prevented the break-in. The point is that not knowing the time makes constant vigilance necessary.

Language and setting

The thief metaphor for Christ's coming is adopted widely in the New Testament (1 Thess 5:2; 2 Pet 3:10; Rev 3:3, 16:15). The metaphor compares only the unexpectedness, not any moral quality.
