Signs of the End

If you're on the roof of your house, don't even go back inside to grab your things. There's no time. Just get out and go.
Houses in that era had flat roofs where people spent time, with outside stairs leading down. Jesus is saying: take those stairs and run, don't even open your front door.
Jesus emphasizes how urgent and immediate the response needs to be.
Imagine being on your roof and getting an evacuation order. Jesus says don't even stop for your phone or your wallet. That's how urgent this will be.
The urgency is intensified: a person on the housetop (dōmatos) — the flat roof used for relaxation and prayer — must not descend to retrieve possessions. First-century houses had external staircases allowing direct roof-to-street escape without entering the house.
The flat rooftop was a common living space in Palestinian homes. Jesus' instruction to flee via the external staircase without going inside emphasizes that seconds count.
Jesus continues His urgent evacuation instructions with vivid, culturally specific details.
Jesus paints a picture of extreme urgency: you're on the roof, and you see the sign. Don't even go back inside your own house. Run immediately.
15So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand),
16then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
17Let no one on the housetop come down to retrieve anything from his house.
18And let no one in the field return for his cloak.
19How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing mothers!
