The scholar's commentary

The exorcism is described simply: epetimēsen autō ho Iēsous kai exēlthen ('Jesus rebuked it and it came out'). The boy was etherapeuthē ('healed') apo tēs hōras ekeinēs ('from that very hour'), emphasizing the immediacy and completeness of the deliverance.

Language and setting

The contrast between the disciples' failure and Jesus' effortless success underscores the christological point: authority over the demonic realm belongs ultimately to Jesus alone.
