The scholar's commentary

Jesus quotes Micah 7:6, applying the prophetic description of societal breakdown to the divisions His mission will cause within families -- son against father, daughter against mother, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.

Language and setting

The allusion to Micah 7:6 places Jesus' ministry within the prophetic tradition of Israel's internal crisis. Micah described a time of moral collapse; Jesus reinterprets it as the cost of messianic allegiance.
