What It Means

Matthew 1:21, in plain English

The angel tells Joseph to name the baby Jesus, which means 'God saves.' And that's exactly what this child will do: save people, not from armies, but from their sins.

A Closer Look

The scholar's commentary

The name Iesous (Jesus) is the Greek form of the Hebrew Yeshua, meaning 'Yahweh saves.' The angel explicitly connects the name to His mission: soteriological deliverance from sin (hamartion), not political liberation from Rome.

Language and setting

First-century Jews expected a political messiah. The angel's description of Jesus's mission as saving 'from sins' rather than 'from enemies' was a radical redefinition of messianic expectation.

The angel of the Lord, continuing his message to Joseph.

Significance

The naming of Jesus defines the entire Gospel narrative: He came not as a military deliverer but as a savior from sin.

22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

23“Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).
