In the crowd was a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. She had spent every penny on doctors, but no one could heal her.
Twelve years of suffering, poverty, and isolation. Her condition made her 'unclean' in Jewish society, cutting her off from worship and community. She had tried everything and everyone. Jesus was her last hope.
Luke introduces us to a desperate woman in the crowd.
For twelve long years, this woman had suffered from a condition no doctor could cure. She had spent everything she had on treatments that never worked, living as an outcast in her own community.
A woman with a rhysis haimatos ('flow of blood') for dōdeka etē ('twelve years') had spent holon ton bion ('her whole livelihood') on iatrois ('physicians') without healing. Her condition rendered her perpetually ritually unclean under Leviticus 15:25-27.
The twelve years of bleeding mirrors the twelve years of Jairus' daughter's life, creating a literary bracket. Luke, traditionally identified as a physician, softens Mark's criticism of doctors. Her uncleanness meant social isolation and exclusion from worship.
