What It Means

Luke 3:22, in plain English

The Holy Spirit came down on Him in a form like a dove, and a voice from heaven said, 'You are My Son, whom I love. I am so pleased with You.'

Why it's here

This is one of the few moments in the Bible where Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all present and visible at the same time. It is God's public stamp of approval on Jesus.

The scholar's commentary

The Holy Spirit descends in bodily form (sōmatikō eidei) like a dove, and a voice from heaven declares: 'You are My beloved Son (ho huios mou ho agapētos); in You I am well pleased (eudokēsa).'

Language and setting

The heavenly voice combines Psalm 2:7 (royal sonship) with Isaiah 42:1 (Suffering Servant), merging kingship with service. The trinitarian scene shows Father, Son, and Spirit simultaneously active.

Significance
