Luke 2:49, in plain English

Jesus answered, 'Why were you looking for Me? Didn't you know I had to be in My Father's house?' These are His very first recorded words—and they reveal everything.

Notice the gentle correction: Mary said 'your father and I,' meaning Joseph. Jesus responds by calling God 'My Father.' At twelve, He already knows exactly who He is.

The scholar's commentary

Jesus responds: 'Why were you searching? Did you not know I must be in My Father's (patros mou) house?' The dei ('it is necessary') indicates divine compulsion; 'My Father' distinguishes God from Joseph.

Language and setting

This is Jesus' first recorded speech in Luke's Gospel and His first self-revelation of divine sonship. The use of dei ('divine necessity') is a key Lukan theme that recurs throughout the Gospel.
