What It Means

A Closer Look

The scholar's commentary

Jesus draws the application: 'any one of you who does not give up everything he has' (pas... hos ouk apotassetai pasin tois heautou hyparchousin) cannot be His disciple. The verb apotassetai means 'to take leave of' or 'renounce.'

Language and setting

This is the third 'cannot be my disciple' statement (after vv. 26, 27), forming a climactic triad that defines discipleship as total renunciation of family, self, and possessions.

Voice

Jesus applies both parables directly to the crowd, stating the ultimate condition of discipleship: complete surrender of all possessions.

Significance

Jesus lands the point: after the tower and the king, the lesson is clear — following Him requires giving up everything. No half-measures.

34Salt is good, but if the salt loses its savor, with what will it be seasoned?

35It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile, and it is thrown out.
