It's like yeast that a woman mixed into a huge batch of flour. You can't see it working, but eventually it transforms everything. The kingdom of God works quietly until it changes the whole world.
Yeast is invisible once it's mixed in, but it affects every particle of dough. That's how the kingdom works -- quietly, thoroughly, transforming everything from the inside out.
Jesus uses a familiar kitchen image to show how the kingdom works: invisibly, thoroughly, and completely.
The kingdom of God doesn't always announce itself with fireworks. Sometimes it works like yeast -- quietly, invisibly -- until one day you realize everything has been transformed.
The kingdom resembles zymē (leaven/yeast) that a woman hid (ekrypsen) in tria sata (three measures, about 40 pounds) of flour until holon ezymōthē (all of it was leavened). The massive quantity and complete permeation highlight the kingdom's transformative power.
Three measures of flour would feed over 100 people -- an enormous batch suggesting the scale of kingdom transformation. The verb ekrypsen (hid) emphasizes the invisibility of the leavening process. The kingdom works unseen until its effects are undeniable.
Jesus uses the image of leaven to illustrate the kingdom's hidden but total transforming influence.
