The scholar's commentary

Building the tombs makes them witnesses (martyres) and consenters (syneudokeite) to their fathers' deeds. The logic: their fathers killed; they build tombs that close the chapter -- effectively endorsing the murders as completed acts they now memorialize.

Language and setting

The act of completing the tombs symbolically completes the fathers' work. Rather than repenting of the violence, building monuments normalizes it as history rather than confronting it as ongoing sin.

Jesus explains the damning connection between tomb-building and moral complicity in prophetic persecution.

Significance

Jesus reads the tomb-building as evidence of guilt, not honor. By finishing what their fathers started, they show they share the same heart -- comfortable with dead prophets but hostile to living ones.
