Jesus said, 'Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.' He did not hide the danger. He sent them anyway.
Jesus never promised safety; He promised presence. Knowing you are a lamb among wolves makes you rely completely on the Shepherd. That vulnerability is actually your strength.
Jesus sends the seventy-two with a vivid warning.
Go, Jesus said. I am sending you like lambs into wolf territory. It was honest, it was terrifying, and it was the call. He did not promise easy; He promised His presence.
The command hypagete ('go!') is followed by the vivid simile: apostellō hymas hōs arnas en mesō lykōn ('I am sending you as lambs among wolves'). The image of arnas ('lambs,' diminutive form) rather than probata ('sheep') heightens the vulnerability, emphasizing total dependence on the Shepherd's protection.
The lamb/wolf metaphor acknowledges genuine danger while commissioning despite it. The diminutive 'lambs' (unique to Luke's version) emphasizes vulnerability more than Matthew's 'sheep,' reinforcing that the missionaries' safety depends entirely on God, not their own strength.
