The incense offering was supposed to be quick. The longer Zechariah stays inside, the more the crowd knows something unusual must be happening.

The scholar's commentary

The people waiting outside wonder at Zechariah's chronizein (delay/taking so long) in the naos (sanctuary), as the incense offering was typically brief.

Language and setting

Prolonged time in the Holy Place could indicate either blessing or judgment. The people's expectation hints at their awareness that something unusual is occurring inside.

Voice

The narrator describes the congregation's growing concern outside.

Significance

The waiting crowd senses something is wrong. The incense offering should be brief, and Zechariah's extended absence creates both concern and anticipation.

20And now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this comes to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time.”

21Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he took so long in the temple.

22When he came out and was unable to speak to them, they realized he had seen a vision in the temple. He kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.

23And when the days of his service were complete, he returned home.
