Unable to answer Jesus' arguments, they resort to insults: You are a Samaritan and demon-possessed! When people cannot win an argument, they attack the person.
Being called a Samaritan was one of the worst insults a Jew could receive. They are throwing everything they have at Jesus because His arguments are unanswerable.
The crowd responds to Jesus' logic with personal attacks.
Insults are the refuge of those who have lost the argument. They could not find sin in Jesus or flaw in His logic, so they attacked His identity instead.
The Jews retaliate with a double insult: calling Jesus a Samaritanēs (Samaritan, implying heresy and mixed blood) and claiming He has a daimonion (demon), the most severe accusations available in their cultural framework.
The Samaritan charge attacks both His ethnic legitimacy and theological orthodoxy. Combined with the demon accusation, this represents total rejection of Jesus' person, message, and claims.

When they cannot refute His logic or find His sin, they resort to slurs. Calling Him a Samaritan and demon-possessed is their last weapon, and it reveals their bankruptcy, not His.
