The Bread of Life

What It Means

John 6:27, in plain English

Jesus tells them to stop working for food that goes bad and start working for food that lasts forever, the kind only He can give. God the Father has put His seal of approval on Jesus.

A Closer Look

The scholar's commentary

Jesus commands them to stop working (ergazesthe) for perishable food (tēn brōsin tēn apollumenēn) and instead work for food that 'endures to eternal life' (tēn brōsin tēn menousan eis zōēn aiōnion). This food the Son of Man will give (dōsei), and the Father has 'sealed' (esphragisen) Him for this purpose.

Language and setting

God's 'seal' (sphragis) on Jesus likely refers to His baptismal anointing with the Spirit, His miracles, or the Father's ongoing authentication. The sealing guarantees that Jesus is the authorized distributor of eternal sustenance.

Voice

Jesus redirects the crowd's pursuit from perishable bread to eternal sustenance, identifying Himself as the one authorized by God to provide it.

Significance

Jesus challenges the crowd to redirect their labor from what perishes to what endures. The bread they ate yesterday is already gone, but what Jesus offers lasts forever. He is the one God has authorized to give the food that truly satisfies.
