A strong wind kicked up and the lake became rough and dangerous. The disciples were caught in a storm.
These were experienced fishermen, and they were in trouble. The storm was beyond what their skills could handle.
The Gospel writer describes the storm that turns a routine crossing into a life-threatening situation.
When the storm hits, everything changes. Confidence turns to fear, plans turn to survival. And in the middle of that chaos, God is about to do something they never expected.
A strong wind (anemos megas) causes the sea to become agitated (diēgeireto). The Sea of Galilee's geography, surrounded by hills with narrow valleys, creates conditions where sudden, violent storms can arise without warning.
The storm on the sea echoes Old Testament theophanies where God demonstrates power over chaotic waters (Psalm 107:23-32; Jonah 1:4). The sea in Jewish thought often represented chaos and danger that only God could control.
The narrator describes the natural threat that adds to the disciples' already vulnerable situation.
The dark night now brings a fierce storm. The disciples, experienced fishermen, find themselves in a situation where their skills are inadequate. The sea, ancient symbol of chaos, threatens to overwhelm them.
16When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was already dark, and Jesus had not yet gone out to them.
18A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated.
19When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the sea—and they were terrified.
20But Jesus spoke up: “It is I; do not be afraid.”
