When evening came, the disciples went down to the lake without Jesus.
The disciples are on their own as night falls. They do not know it yet, but they are about to face a storm, and Jesus will come to them in the most unexpected way.
The Gospel writer sets a dark scene: the disciples heading into the night without Jesus.
Sometimes you end up in the dark without Jesus nearby, or so it seems. The disciples were about to learn that even when they cannot see Him, He sees them.
As evening (opsia) falls, the disciples go down to the sea without Jesus. This sets the stage for the walking-on-water miracle that follows.
The disciples' descent to the sea in the evening creates a symbolic contrast: they move from the mountain of revelation into darkness and danger. Jesus' absence heightens the tension.
