John 4:20, in plain English

A Closer Look

The scholar's commentary

The woman raises the central dispute between Jews and Samaritans: the proper location of worship. 'This mountain' refers to Mount Gerizim, where the Samaritans had built their temple (destroyed by John Hyrcanus in 128 BC), versus Jerusalem's temple.

Language and setting

This was not a trivial question. The Samaritan Pentateuch included a commandment to worship on Gerizim (Deuteronomy 27:4, reading 'Gerizim' instead of 'Ebal'). The dispute over worship location was the defining issue separating the two communities.

Voice

The Samaritan woman raises the most theologically charged question between Jews and Samaritans, possibly as a deflection from personal matters or as a genuine inquiry to this prophet.

Significance

Whether she is deflecting from her personal life or genuinely seizing the opportunity to ask a prophet the biggest question of her tradition, the woman raises the fundamental divide between her people and the Jews. Jesus' answer will transcend both positions.
