The sin the Spirit exposes is this: they do not believe in Jesus. At its core, the world's problem is not bad behavior but unbelief.

The world's fundamental sin is unbelief in Jesus (hoti ou pisteuousin eis eme). Sin is not defined here primarily as moral failure but as the rejection of Christ, which is the root of all other sin.
In Johannine theology, unbelief is the cardinal sin because it rejects the one solution God has provided. All other sins flow from this fundamental failure to trust Jesus.
Jesus specifies the nature of the sin the Spirit will expose.
Jesus identifies the world's root sin: not any specific transgression but the refusal to believe in Him. This is the sin beneath all sins, the rejection of God's offer of life. The Spirit will convict the world of this fundamental failure.
7But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
8And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
9in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me;
10in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;
11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.
