Sorrow Turned to Joy

But I have told you these things so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you. John 16:4 · Berean Standard Bible

What It Means

John 16:4, in plain English

Jesus says: I'm telling you now so that when it happens, you'll remember I warned you. I didn't say it earlier because I was still with you to protect you.

Why it's here

While Jesus was physically present, He was their shield. Now that He is leaving, they need to be prepared in a different way: through His words and the Spirit's power.

Jesus was their protector, and while He was with them, they didn't need these warnings. But now He is leaving, and they need to be armed with knowledge. When the persecution comes, they will remember: He told us this would happen. He is still in control.

A Closer Look

The scholar's commentary

Jesus has spoken in advance so the disciples will remember His warnings when persecution arrives. He also notes He did not tell them earlier because His presence made it unnecessary.

Language and setting

The phrase 'their hour' (hē hōra autōn) stands in contrast to Jesus' 'hour.' While Jesus' hour brings salvation, the persecutors' hour brings suffering. Yet both are under God's sovereign timetable.

Voice

Jesus explains both why He is telling them now and why He did not tell them before.

Significance

Jesus reveals His pastoral strategy: earlier, His presence shielded them; now, as He departs, they need explicit warnings. When 'their hour' of persecution comes, the disciples will remember Jesus' words and find their faith confirmed rather than destroyed.
