John 14:22, in plain English

One of the other disciples asks: Lord, why are You going to reveal Yourself to us but not to the whole world? It seems like a fair question.

Why it's here

This disciple expected a Messiah who would take the world stage. But Jesus' plan is different: He works from the inside out, transforming hearts before transforming nations.

The scholar's commentary

Judas (not Iscariot) asks why Jesus will reveal Himself to the disciples but not to the world. This question reflects messianic expectations of a public, political manifestation.

Language and setting

This 'other Judas' (cf. Luke 6:16, Acts 1:13) voices a common Jewish expectation: the Messiah would manifest publicly to all nations. Jesus' answer redirects from external manifestation to internal indwelling.

Significance

Another disciple named Judas voices the confusion many feel: if Jesus is the Messiah, why reveal Himself privately to a few rather than publicly to the world? The question expects a political answer, but Jesus' response will point inward.
