Jesus says: I gave you an example, and I want you to follow it. Do for each other what I just did for you.
This isn't about literal foot washing as much as it is about the posture of your heart. Jesus is saying: let My life be your blueprint for how you treat others.

Jesus designates His action as a 'pattern' or 'example' (hypodeigma), intended for imitation. The verb 'should do' (poiēte) indicates ongoing practice, not a one-time event.
Whether this establishes a literal foot-washing ordinance or a general ethic of service has been debated since the early church. The principle of Christ-like humble service is the clear emphasis.

Jesus makes His intention explicit: the foot washing was not a spontaneous gesture but a deliberate pattern for His followers. Just as He served them, they must serve one another. His life is the template for theirs.
13You call Me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, because I am.
14So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you.
16Truly, truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
