The scholar's commentary

John notes that the audience failed to understand (ouk egnōsan) the 'paroimian' (figurative discourse)—distinct from the Synoptic 'parabolē,' this term denotes a symbolic speech requiring spiritual insight.

Language and setting

The audience's incomprehension mirrors the pattern throughout John's Gospel where Jesus' symbolic language is taken literally (cf. Nicodemus in 3:4, the Samaritan woman in 4:11).

Voice

The narrator provides an editorial comment on the audience's failure to grasp Jesus' teaching.

Significance

Despite the vivid agricultural imagery, the listeners miss the point entirely, prompting Jesus to explain more directly in the verses that follow.
