John introduces two of his key theological terms — life and light — both of which will recur throughout the Gospel. Zōē in John signifies not merely biological existence but the eternal, divine quality of life.
The evangelist describes the Word as the source of life and the illumination of humanity.
The prologue moves from creation to revelation: the Word who creates also gives life, and that life illuminates human existence, giving it meaning and direction.
