They needed a label, a title, something to put in their report. But John's identity couldn't be captured by a title — it was captured by a mission.
The frustrated delegates press John for a definitive answer they can take back.
They wanted a name, a category. But John wasn't interested in titles. He was interested in one thing: pointing people to Jesus.
The delegates insist on an answer they can bring back to those who sent them, pressing John to define himself.
Their persistence reflects the bureaucratic pressure of their commission — they need a report for the Sanhedrin. The question 'What do you say about yourself?' puts John on record.
The delegation demands a self-identification from John the Baptist to report to their superiors.
The interrogation intensifies as the delegates need to fulfill their commission. Their question inadvertently sets up one of the most powerful self-identifications in the Gospel.
