Job has been sitting in ashes, covered in sores, grieving and arguing. God's command to 'brace yourself like a man' isn't about toughness for its own sake—it's an invitation to show up fully and honestly to what's about to happen.

God demands that Job prepare himself mentally and physically for a serious examination, shifting from passive complaint to active engagement.
The imperative אֱזוֹר (ezor, gird up) was the ancient preparation for combat, journey, or intense labor — as when servants girded their loins before serving. Job is being summoned to intellectual and spiritual readiness. The medieval commentator David Kimchi (Radak) observed that this phrasing suggests Job must brace himself not for punishment but for profound truth-telling. The interrogative structure that follows ('I will question you, and you shall inform Me') reverses the expected dynamic: God becomes the questioner, Job the responder.

This echoes the pattern in which God summons human interlocutors to accountability — Abraham in Genesis 18, Moses at the burning bush, the prophets in their commissioning. The structure suggests that true understanding comes not through passive reception but through dialogical engagement with the questioner.
