Jeremiah 1:9, in plain English

The scholar's commentary

God physically touches Jeremiah's mouth and metaphorically places divine words within him, commissioning him as a spokesman for God.

Language and setting

The gesture of touching the mouth (נִגַּע־יָדוֹ אֶל־פִּי) recalls Isaiah's similar experience (Isaiah 6:7) where a seraph touches Isaiah's lips with a coal. This tactile commissioning was visceral and memorable—prophets didn't simply receive intellectual concepts but experienced physical transformation. The Hebrew phrase שִׂמְתִּי דְבָרַי בְּפִיךָ ('I have put My words in your mouth') appears also in Deuteronomy 18:18's messianic prophet prophecy, establishing continuity between Jeremiah and later prophetic expectation. The Reformation theologian John Calvin emphasized that this wasn't metaphorical inspiration but actual divine speech placed within the prophet's mouth.
