Language and setting

The imperative 'let us not sleep' (mē katheudomēn) is not about literal sleep but spiritual complacency, a form of moral numbness. Paul's use of the first-person plural ('let us') includes himself in the exhortation, establishing solidarity with the community rather than positioning himself as detached authority. The Thessalonians, facing potential social pressure to assimilate to Roman values, were vulnerable to this exact hazard.
